How to choose a digital wardrobe app

A wardrobe app is meant to answer one small question every morning: what to wear. Most of them wander off and answer a different one, usually what to buy. Here's what the main ones actually do, and where Dodee sits, including where it doesn't.

What's out there

Grouped by what each one is really for.

• The organizers. Stylebook is the veteran, an iPhone app for people who like a spreadsheet: manual cataloguing, cost-per-wear, calendar planning, a one-time price, no AI. Indyx is the same instinct across iPhone, Android, and web, and it will even put a real human stylist on the clothes you own.
• The free catalog. Whering is the popular one, on every platform, with no cap on what you add. Its heart is in sustainability: cost-per-wear, resale, repair.
• The kitchen sink. Acloset does a bit of everything, automatic background removal, AI looks, a social feed, a resale marketplace. Free up to a point, paid after.
• The capsule. Cladwell is for people who've gone minimal. Commit to a small closet and it hands you a daily outfit from it.
• The generators. GetWardrobe and Dressly are the newer, AI-first ones, built around automatic tagging and machine-made looks.

Two things worth noticing before you commit. Most of these send your photos to a server to do the tagging. And most are built to sell you something in the end, a garment, a listing, a higher tier. That's a fair deal for plenty of people. Just know it's the deal.

How to pick one

A few questions sort them quickly.

• Own closet, or shopping? If the point is to wear what you already have, an app that opens with a buy button is solving a different problem.
• How much setup? Cataloguing a closet by hand is a second job. The apps that tag from a photo are the ones you'll still be using next month.
• Weather and occasion? An outfit that ignores the forecast or the dress code isn't much of a suggestion.
• Planning and packing? A whole week at once, or a capsule for a trip, is where these apps save real time.
• Your photos? You'll take a lot of them. Worth knowing whether they stay on your phone or land on a company's servers.
